The Certified Pool Operator Certification (or CPO Certification) is a training program that provides with you everything you need to know to safely operate and manage a swimming facility. In fact, many states and provinces require that all public or semi-public aquatic facilities have a CPO Certified operator on site at all times in order to make sure that all codes, regulations, and safety standard are being met.
There are multiple ways for someone to get their CPO Certification! You can get it online or by taking an in-person class and Pool Training Academy makes either path a breeze!
PLEASE NOTE: There are other ways to get your CPO Certification like a 2-day virtual Zoom class or a hybrid between online and in-person classes as well. These class options tend to be a little confusing and many companies don’t offer them because of their complicated nature, but if you’re interested in options and availabilities for these formats, please contact alex@pooltrainingacademy.com

A CPO® Certification Course with Pool Training Academy will cover everything you need to become an aquatics facility professional!
Chemical testing and maintenance are at the heart of safe and effective pool operations. For any certified pool operator, mastering these skills is essential to maintaining the water quality and safety of swimming pools and spas. The CPO certification course is designed to provide pool operators with extensive knowledge of chemical testing procedures, chemical hazards, and the proper use of chemical feed systems, all in accordance with key safety regulations set by the Hot Tub Alliance and other leading industry authorities.
Through the comprehensive CPO training program, participants learn the importance of regular chemical testing—monitoring pH, chlorine, and other critical water chemistry parameters—to ensure a healthy aquatic environment. The course also covers how to identify and mitigate chemical hazards, such as improper storage or handling of pool chemicals, which can lead to serious safety incidents, including diving accidents. The CPO handbook serves as a valuable resource, offering step-by-step guidance on chemical testing, maintenance routines, and the safe operation of chemical feed systems.
In addition to chemical testing, the CPO certification program delves into related aspects of pool maintenance, such as filtration systems, spa management, and overall water chemistry. Whether you choose an online course (a Zoom course), or an in-person class, the CPO course is structured to give you the practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed to manage swimming pools and spas with confidence. The online training is flexible, allowing you to learn at your own pace, and includes practice exams and multiple exam attempts to support your successful completion of the CPO exam.
Upon passing the exam, you’ll receive an electronic CPO certificate, demonstrating your professional credibility and competence in pool operations, including chemical testing and maintenance. This certification is recognized throughout the aquatics industry and is often required by local regulations for anyone responsible for pool maintenance, spa operations, or aquatic facility management.
The certification journey with Pool Training Academy is designed to fit your schedule and learning style, whether you prefer a live class, virtual delivery (self-paced study with 1-day Zoom session). With access to certified instructors and the world’s leading education in pool and spa operations, you’ll be fully prepared to maintain safe, healthy aquatic environments and respond effectively to any challenges that arise.
By becoming a CPO certified pool operator, you not only ensure compliance with safety regulations but also enhance your professional standing and open doors to new opportunities in the aquatics industry. The CPO certification program equips you with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to excel in pool maintenance, spa management, and aquatic facility operations—making you an invaluable asset to any organization committed to pool safety and excellence.

CPO Certification is legally required in 24 states as well as the District of Columbia currently, but the list of states is constantly growing! It’s important to remember that even though your state may not require CPO Certification, it’s still highly recommended to have a CPO certified operator at your facility to greatly reduce the risk of injury, death, or legal action resulting from a lack of operational knowledge.

and many, many more!
